Acrylic, methyl methacrylate, abbreviated as PMMA. As a thermoplastic material, various finished specifications of acrylic are widely used in color light covers, door and window covers, windshields, mechanical covers, door and window glass, decoration, advertising materials, handicrafts, shower appliances and kitchen appliances, etc.
The advantages of acrylic sheet are high transmittance, low turbidity, good processing performance, excellent weather resistance. Acrylic can withstand ultraviolet light, high temperature and strong sunlight, resisting to solvents and chemicals. The disadvantage of acrylic is poor impact resistance, but the improved acrylic sheet can meet the requirements of anti-impact performance in many occasions.
PVC is such an excellent thermoforming material that can replace some stainless steel and other corrosion-resistant synthetic materials. Therefore, PVC is widely used in the fields of chemical petroleum, electroplating, water purification treatment equipment, environmental protection equipment, mining, medicine, electronics, communications and decoration. PVC has excellent chemical stability, corrosion resistance, high hardness, high strength, UV resistance, fire isolation, reliable insulation, smooth surface, waterproofing, no deformation, and other characteristics.
So, what are the differences between PMMA and PVC?
1. Colors
The stability of PVC board is poor, and it is easily decomposed during processing. Generally, background color of PVC will be yellower than that of acrylic in the same color.
2. Density
The density of transparent PVC board is 1.38g/cm3, and that of acrylic board is 1.1g/cm3. At the same size, PVC board is heavier.
3. Sound
Throwing two same size sheets on the floor or knocking them with your hands, you will find that the clear sound is acrylic and the dull one is PVC.
4. Smell of burning
Acrylic sparks yellow flame and gives smell of alcohol when it burns, without smoke. When PVC board burns, flame is green, with smell of hydrochloric acid, emitting white smoke.
5. Price
PVC is cheaper than PMMA.
